Several months ago I decided to donate marketing hours to a local Tucson nonprofit organization. Knowing there are many organizations that could use, and would greatly appreciate, this donation I decided to consult an authority in the sector for a recommendation.

I contacted my good friend Carolyn Sechler in Phoenix. She owns Carolyn Sechler, CPA PC and has a client base of about 250 nonprofit organizations. Surely she would know a worthy recipient of my offer. Without hesitation she suggested that I contact Hildy Gottlieb.

Carolyn had spoke very highly of Hildy in the past. I knew Hildy had co-founded a diaper drive in Tucson that was very successful and expanded into a diaper bank here as well as the Phoenix area. What I didn't know was that Hildy had written several books and, along with her partner Dimitri, was very involved in inspiring the nonprofit sector in changing the way they do their work. Their organization called 'Creating the Future' (formerly Community-Driven Institute) has a purpose to aim every aspect of 'social change organizations' work toward creating dramatic improvement in their community's quality of life.

I was excited about their ventures and fortunate to get involved just as a new name had been selected and the difficult task of describing the organization and it's services was being verbalized. What an exciting time to meet Hildy and Dimitri!

In past years I've had quite a bit of experience helping technology companies verbalize their products or applications to potential customers or investors in documents. I explained my 'brain dump' process that I used with companies, prior to writing a business plan, to Hildy and Dimitri. They felt that the half-day session of answering the questions in a prepared outline could prove beneficial to 'Creating the Future'.

We had the meeting on July 1st and indeed it did prove helpful to focus the "who we are" and "what we do" description of a very complicated and encompassing organization. I loved the fact that many of the questions evoked a tremendous amount of thought with Hildy and Dimitri. Hopefully the resulting document should prove useful to the organization when conducting their 5-year growth strategy and in applying for their 501c3.

I'm looking forward to watching and experiencing the growth and success of 'Creating the Future' and to my continued participation on projects with Hildy and Dimitri.

Inspiring Idea
I like the idea of donating writing skills to help out a local organization. smilies/cheesy.gif. With the economy in the dumps, it is so good to turn to our local area. The added bonus of using your talent to define the direction a company is going only sweetens the pot. I commend you for your forward thinking and complement you on the professional result.

Thank you!

We have so appreciated your help in clarifying how we describe our work. You gave us a framework for thinking differently about some of the work we are doing and how we talk about that - all of which has been tremendously helpful.

Looking forward to the future we create together!
